Ride the Rides

Where the rides were. The Palace after the 1955-56 expansion. Photo copyrighted by Milton Edelman. view larger image
It's still possible to experience some of the fun and excitement of Palace Amusements today. The following list is a sampling of places that have operating rides that are the same (or substantially similar) to the rides that used to be at the Palace. Although these are the same models, it is unlikely that any of them are the actual rides from the Palace. Amusement parks regularly change their attractions, and although this list has been confirmed to be accurate as of March 2005, we strongly recommend that visitors contact venues before traveling to make sure that these rides are still in operation. Should you find an operating Palace ride that is not listed below, please contact us.

BUBBLE BOUNCE:

Sylvan Beach Amusement Park (Ride is named "Tip Top")
Sylvan Beach, New York 13157

BUMPER BOATS:

Bumper boats are an extremely common ride found at many parks and family entertainment centers today. There are far too many to list.

CAROUSEL:

Almost every amusement park still has a carousel. Many are modern rides with fiberglass horses, however a large number of antique carousels similar to the Palace's continue to operate throughout the United States. Carousels.com has a long list of these classic rides.

CATERPILLAR:

DARK RIDES:

The Palace dark rides had many different names over the years -- the Ghost Town, the Haunted Caves, Hell 'N' Back, Wacky Shack, Haunted Castle, and the Orient Express. These were all custom built and used cars and track from the Pretzel Ride Company. It is impossible to find an exact copy of any of the Palace's dark rides. However there are still many similar attractions operating across the country. A detailed list can be found at dafe.org.

FERRIS WHEEL:

Nearly every amusement park in the world has a Ferris wheel of some type, and it is impossible to list all of them here. None of today's Ferris wheels are identical to the one-of-a-kind ride that used to rise through the roof of the Palace.

FLYING COASTER:

Only one original Flying Coaster is known to exist today:

Kennywood Park (Ride is named "The Kangaroo")
4800 Kennywood Boulevard
West Mifflin, Pennsylvania 15122
412-461-0500
www.kennywood.com

FUN HOUSE:

It is still possible to find walk-through fun houses in operation today. However due to the threat of personal injury lawsuits nearly all of them have eliminated or significantly scaled back the classic elements such as the rotating barrel and the huge slide that used to be part of the Palace Fun House.

There is one park in Pennsylvania that has admirably resisted the pressure to modernize their classic fun house, which is called the "Barl of Fun". This wonderful old attraction contains the only known full size, operating barrel in the United States:

OLYMPIC BOBS:

The Olympic Bobs ride at the Palace was the only one ever produced by Chance Manufacturing. It was sold when the Palace closed, and today its whereabouts is unknown.

A nearly identical ride known as the "Bayern Kurve" was manufactured by one of Chance's competitors, Schwarzkopf Industries. The Kurve and the Bobs were so similar that they even shared the same illuminated pine trees and sun scenery. Two Bayern Kurve rides are known to exist today:
